The Philadelphia Phillies are an American professional baseball franchise, the oldest continuous one-name, one-city franchise in all of professional American sports, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Phillies compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) East division.
The Phillies wanted to create a unique media experience for their fans to start their 2017 season. To help them with their goal, Greenfish helped devise a solution to provide the Phillies with the first live 360 VR broadcast of an MLB Opening Ceremony. We used a multi-camera setup for the livestream, positioning our 360 camera rigs in choice spots around the stadium and field. We switched between these viewpoints during the livestream. Each viewpoint had a picture-in-picture embedded into it which displayed a traditional media broadcast of the ceremony in addition to the 360 media around it. Because VR is still a new concept to many people, we also created a traditional video of the Philly Phanatic as a fun and engaging way to show viewers how to use their mobile device or computer’s 360 viewing capabilities.
The livestream ended up being very successful in facilitating a high level of community engagement on the Phillies social media channels. Within a week the video had 108,894 views, 486 shares, 3,498 interactions (likes, loves, etc), 521 comments, and an engagement rate of 4.14%
